Bloomsburg Falls to Cheyney in Women's Basketball

BLOOMSBURG -The Bloomsburg University women's basketball team fell to Cheyney, 60-58 in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division action on Saturday.

Both teams got out to a slow start in the first half, as Cheyney did not score a field goal until five minutes into the first period. Bloomsburg would find their offensive rhythm when Lauren Healy (Glenmoore/Owen J. Roberts) hit a three-pointer nine-and-a-half minutes in to give Bloomsburg a 9-7 lead. Cheyney responded with a 12-3 run, capped by a Georgia Anderson lay-up which gave Cheyney a 19-12 lead with 6:56 remaining in the first half.

The Huskies would quickly answer following a media timeout. Back-to-back baskets by Monica Dennison (Zion Grove/Hazelton Area) and Kelly Joyce (Ashland/Cardinal Brennan) cut the lead down to four, and after a Cheyney lay-up, Colleen Kegerreis (Schuylkill Haven/Schuylkill Haven) scored on consecutive possessions to tie the game at 21 with 2:38 left in the first. Cheyney would score two quick baskets, but a Healy three-pointer cut the lead to one, 25-24 at the end of the first half.

In the second half, the Huskies would fall behind before Stephanie Jones (Philadelphia/Manor College) scored five straight points to put the Huskies up by two, 29-27, with 16:24 remaining. The teams would trade baskets over next five minutes before a Martina Randall three-pointer gave Cheyney a seven point lead, 42-35 with 8:58 left.

Cheyney would maintain a seven-point lead until the four minute mark, when the Huskies would close the gap. Kegerreis would score seven points in a span of just under two minutes to cut the Cheyney lead down to one, 56-55, with only 2:14 left in the game. On the next possession, Kegerreis blocked a Cheyney shot, while Joyce controlled the rebound and was fouled. Joyce hit two free throws to give the Huskies a one-point lead with 1:01 left to play. Cheyney would answer at the other end, and the Huskies could not convert in the last minute, allowing Cheyney to escape with the narrow victory.

Kegerries led the way for the Huskies, scoring 19 points to go along with 13 rebounds. Healy added 15 points as well for Bloomsburg. Lutfiyya Muhammed led Cheyney with 20 points. With the loss, Bloomsburg falls to 7-15, 2-5 in the PSAC East, while Cheyney improves to 4-3 in the PSAC East, 7-14 overall.

The Huskies return to action on Wednesday Night when they travel to Millersville for a 6:00 p.m. tip-off.
